Hi – I am Derya, a PhD student in the Joint Program offered by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). I am a member of Hanu Singh’s Lab that designed, built and operates the autonomous underwater vehicle (auv) SeaBED.

We are traveling with SeaBED to Bellinghausen Sea, in order to run it under the ice to make a map of ice thickness distribution. We will also use a laser scanner on the ice to make the same map from above, then marry the two. We will be at sea approximately 30 days and it will take us somewhere around 10 days to get to and from the research vessel we’ll be on. The entire cruise is through the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). Our expedition officially starts on October 27, 2010, and we’re expected to be back home around December 4, 2010.

Team members are (from Left to Right): Derya, Chris, Hanu, Clay and Jeff (not in photo).

This blog is set up to reflect my personal experience on what it is like to be a part of a large scale expedition, and not to provide technical details of the research being conducted. I hope everyone following my posts will be able to get a sense of what it’s like to go to Antarctica!
